Kieran Tierney has officially rejoined Celtic Football Club, signing a long-term contract that will see him remain with the Scottish champions until the summer of 2030.

The move marks a significant homecoming for the 28-year-old defender, who first rose to prominence through Celtic’s youth system before making a high-profile transfer to Arsenal in 2019.

Earlier this year, Tierney signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic, signaling his intention to return to the club where he began his professional career. Following confirmation of his departure from Arsenal last week, the deal has now been finalized, bringing Tierney back to Glasgow to wear the green and white once again.

Tierney, who made his first senior appearance for Celtic over ten years ago, shared his excitement in an interview with the club’s official website, celticfc.com.

“It’s been something that everyone has been aware of for a little while now, and to finally pull on the Celtic jersey again is just an incredible feeling,” he said. “I had great conversations with the manager. We’ve worked together in the past, and we’ve always stayed in touch.
He’s an outstanding leader, and I feel fortunate that he has trusted me with the opportunity to return. My main goal is to help Celtic stay at the top of Scottish football, continue our success in all competitions, and bring more silverware to this amazing club.”

During his initial spell at Celtic, Tierney made 170 appearances and was a key figure in the team’s remarkable run of success, which included winning 10 major trophies.

That period featured three consecutive domestic trebles, many of which came under the leadership of current manager Brendan Rodgers, who has also returned to the club for a second managerial stint.

Rodgers expressed his enthusiasm about Tierney’s return, saying, “We’re absolutely thrilled to bring Kieran back to Celtic. He’s a top-class footballer with tremendous ability, and his presence will significantly strengthen our squad.

Tierney’s time at Arsenal had its highs and lows. He initially impressed with his performances but was hampered by injuries, most notably a knee issue that sidelined him toward the end of the 2021–22 season.

With increased competition for places and reduced playing time, Tierney spent the 2023–24 campaign on loan at Spanish side Real Sociedad. Upon returning to Arsenal, he featured in 20 matches in the latter part of the season, with the majority of those appearances coming from the bench.

His transfer is part of a wider reshuffle at Arsenal, with Tierney becoming one of 17 players to exit the North London club since the season ended. Most of the departures have been free transfers.

The only players leaving for undisclosed fees were Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos, who moved to Lazio and Cruzeiro, respectively.

Veteran midfielder Jorginho has also completed a move, joining Brazilian giants Flamengo on a free transfer. In addition, 13 players from Arsenal’s Academy have been released as part of the club’s end-of-season roster changes.

The departing young players include Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, Khayon Edwards, Romari Forde, Jimi Gower, Jack Henry-Francis, Brian Okonkwo, Salah-Eddine Oulad M’Hand, Ismail Oulad M’Hand, Elian Quesada-Thorn, Jakai Fisher, Reece Clairmont, Max Kuczynski, and Zacariah Shuaib. Raheem Sterling and Neto have also left after concluding their respective loan spells.
